Indica vs Sativa

and what Friend Jen & Co recommends:

When it comes to using cannabis, it’s important to understand the characteristics and effects of different types and strains to choose what’s best for you. Today we’re comparing two species of cannabis, indica and sativa, as well as looking at a hybrid between the two.  Finally, we can tell you what our team at Friend Jen & Co recommends.

First, a comparison between Sativa and Indica

Sativa and Indica are both strains of cannabis and can be compared in terms of appearance, THC and CBD levels as well as their effects and how each is used.

Appearance

When it comes to comparing these two strains of cannabis, one of the most noticeable aspects will be differences in their physical appearance. Sativa plants are tall and thin with slim, light green leaves while indica plants will be short with broad, dark green leaves. Indica also grows faster than sativa and produces more buds.

THC and CBD levels

Sativa will usually contain lower doses of CBD and higher doses of THC while indica strains often have higher levels of CBD, however, the THC level is usually around the same as the CBD levels.

Effects and Use

As sativa often produces an energizing effect, it can be used during the day for increased productivity and focus. On the other hand, indica is better used at night due to its deeply relaxing effects and can also help to reduce pain.

What about a hybrid?

Hybrids occur when growers combine characteristics of multiple strains of cannabis to produce new and unique strains. This is often done to achieve a desired and more balanced effect that may not be accomplished with the use of just one strain. It’s also a way to get plants that can grow faster and yield more.

  • Sativa dominant vs. Indica dominant strains

Sometimes, you will also hear the terms sativa dominant or indica dominant when it comes to describing hybrids. Some tend to argue that all strains are technically hybrid and only very few are true Indicas or true Sativas. Put simply, sativa-dominant strains are more characteristic of the sativa plant based on growth pattern and effect on the user while indica-dominant strains are more characteristic of the indica plant in growth pattern and effect on the user.

That's why you’d often see the content of each strain described on a percentage scale. For example, if a strain falls on the scale at around 70% indica, that would mean it’s also 30% sativa.

Here’s what we recommend

At Friend Jen, we offer a variety of indica, sativa, and hybrid strains. Indica is best used by patients who are looking to experience a relaxed sensation and body high. If that’s what you’re after then we recommend the highly medicinal GG4 which is a great indica strain for medical use and causes relaxing and euphoric effects. You can also try M.A.C (miracle alien cookies), a premium strain that’s great for a social high making you feel relaxed, happy and euphoric all at once.

Sativa, however, is great for those who like to use medical marijuana during the day as it typically provides stimulation, creativity and increases focus. Blue Dream is a great sativa strain for medical use that’s particularly useful for the relief of anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, depression, headaches, and inflammation. We also recommend Freakshow which gives you an uplifted feeling with body tingles.

Screaming Eagle is one of our favorite hybrid strains for all-day, mixed use. The smoking experience is very smooth, mellow and cerebral. It’s perfect for those with PTSD and anxiety and will leave you feeling euphoric yet relaxing and calming.
